Here's a versatile hat I designed for my DH. It can be worn as a stylish watch cap when he needs the extra warmth, with its deeply ribbed cuff folded up, or as a slouchy knit hat.
A stripe of contrasting color was knit into the cuff. Once the ribbing is completed, the chevron pattern is worked with a gently shaped crown. The finished hat has a cool, geometric design throughout, ending with a pleasing diamond shape at the top, resembling a dreamcatcher.
Knits up beautifully in the cashmere blend used here, or grab some cushy worsted-weight yarn from your stash, adding stripes or color changes as you wish to fit your yardage.
A lace version is included as well, which has a beautiful lacy motif at the top of the crown. Both versions are charted and written out.
With the option of the non-lace and lace versions, this is easily a pattern you'll use over and over again. Great as a gift for your favorite couple!

I knit this hat in one color in two evenings while watching television. I ribbed for ten rows and then started the pattern as I did not wish for a rolled cuff. The lace version makes a stylish hat for a girl or woman. I will knit the non-lace version for males. Next time I will knit the cuff using #7 needles and switch to #8 for the body of the hat. I appreciate having both charted and written instructions.

Directions are clear and the 2 options are always appreciated. Lots of your own personal adaptions of colors and materials are possible, too.
